Cripes - what other groups does this remind us of: “Pro-ana groups vary from those acting as a non-judgmental support group for anorexics to those who believe that anorexia nervosa is a lifestyle choice and not a mental disorder.”
I second Fern’s judgement of David Farrier as being so focussed on the horse he’s backed - i.e. gender ideology - winning, he’s prepared to be totally unethical. Revolting behaviour!
In the last nine months of her life, Vanessa’s trans identity was fully endorsed by everyone around her - teachers, social workers, housing providers, doctor - EVERYONE. It was not lack of gender affirmation that killed her, it was the lack of the state to properly look after the welfare of a severely ill teenager, after alienating her from her parents.
Yes. As others have said, there is NO replacement for real-time family support that isn't second-best or worse. Look at the state- care matter more generally.
David Farrier has not recovered from being a closet homosexual at Elim Christian school and is still supposedly suffering. Those of us who know about real homophobia from the 60s/ 70s and before, who have dealt with it, gained equality sometime ago, are getting rather sick of the wimpy woke whining constantly seeing discrimination where there isn't any younger generation. Its time for these pathetic bleeding hearts to focus on real issues not identity politics. Furthermore those who don't agree with the changes in society have the right to their views, we all do. These little woke journalists need to get a life and try living it to the full.
The wilful ignoring of the Cass review by 'journalists' like Farrier, politicians and also seemingly by our own Health service is beyond frustrating. What ever happened to 'follow the science'?
"Korte and Gille [German Society for Sexual Medicine, Sexual Therapy and Sexual Science/DGSMTW https://segm.org/gender-dysphoria-anorexia-korte-gille-elective-affinities] illustrate how trans identification and anorexia can be understood as interconnected manifestations of deeper psychological struggles. They contrast the more sensitive psychodynamic approach to anorexia to the incurious affirmative approach that trans-identified girls meet with in many gender clinics. Korte and Gille caution that trans-affirmative approaches risk causing iatrogenic harms and urge clinicians to “be wary and question any universal idea of salvation that seeks to alleviate psychological suffering” through altering the body and to avoid pathologizing temporary crises. The role of the clinician is to compassionately challenge a patient’s fixed ideas, rather than collude with her self-rejection." quote from https://elizamondegreen.substack.com/p/some-girls-really-really-want-out?utm_source=publication-search
Pro ana has been around for many years. My neice, now almost 50, was severely anorexic in her teens. These groups were here then. Did doctors, teachers and other professionals direct these poor anorexic kids towards them? And yet, this does not apply to kids who believe they are 'born in the wrong body'.
Even if you put aside any particular take on what occurred, it strikes me as both bizarre and the height of arrogance to take it upon yourself to decide that messages from a minor who is obviously in no position to consent should be made public.
Even before the views expressed, it seriously calls into question Farrier’s journalistic ethics that he appears to have not questioned the appropriateness of doing this.
The other thing I find particularly disturbing is that so much of the public discussion in NZ seems to be operating as if Hannah Barnes’s book, the Cass Review and the like simply doesn’t exist.
Whilst I’ve lost hope of certain quarters of the media doing anything but pushing an activist agenda, the lack of seriousness from more mainstream organisations at this point can only be described as cowardice.
One of the reasons progress has been made in the UK is fantastic journalists like Julie Bindel, Hannah Barnes, Helen Lewis, Suzanne Moore, Hadley Freeman, Sarah Ditum, Victoria Smith, Sonya Sodha and others (many if not most on the political left) have refused to shut up. They have a voice and a platform. It’s prevented it from simply being painted as a partisan left/right culture war issue. Sadly NZ appears to have no one in a position to take it on in the mainstream.
Farrier censors any dissenting comments from his blog to maintain ideological purity. He is basically a cult-leader at this point.
His colleague Hayden Donnell, who is part of RNZ, is equally ideological. His tenure at RNZ's Media Watch has drastically undermined the integrity of what used to be a superb piece of traditional forth-estate journalism.

Eliza Mondegreen is excellent. Gender affirmation is intellectually lazy and lethal but it’s policy in NZ.
Farrier’s actions on this are heinous.
The evidence keeps piling up that telling lies to children, namely that humans can change sex, is a form of child abuse.
